THE NUEVA ESPAÑA

by Casa Ricordi last modified 2008-08-06 17:26

The cycle La Nueva España, written between 1992 and 1999, is a suite of six symphonic poems dedicated to the conquest of Mexico, and it deals with key moments in the country’s history whether real or, perhaps, legendary, like the burning of Cortés’s ships. Although being absolutely independent, the cycle may also be considered a kind of preparatory study for the opera La Conquista (Prague, National Theatre, 2005).

Ferrero writes: "If an underlying inspiration and a love for that world can be summed up in a few words, it is the sense of loss of an extremely sophisticated civilisation, which, though still surviving in many manifestations of thought, life and art even up to today, was destroyed in its integrity by the violent imposition of a different culture. Today, in other ways and forms, not always less violent, each one of us is exposed to a similar destiny. So it makes sense to reevoke its reality and its myth."
