Enno Poppe’s "Speicher": Reviews

The world premiere of Enno Poppe’s Speicher cycle was one of the highlights of Donaueschinger Musiktage 2013 and received brilliant reviews: „When the 80-minute piece was over, you immediately wanted to listen to Speicher again“ (FAZ). Now the Musikfest Berlin presents the cycle on September 20, 2014. Click here for more press quotes from NZZ, Die Welt, and many more.

"Enno Poppe, 43 years old, goes his own way. He belongs to no school. He sets his own rules and follows them. Some people say he is a genius. His composition >Speicher I-VI< starts with motives motifs just like classical chamber music. An entanglement of detailed reprises evolves out of short and concise melodies. It stretches and lives like an organism.

In summary: with this work Poppe has become a part of the history of Donaueschinger Musiktage. He is the master of developing variation and “durchbrochene Arbeit”. This is probably the only way to create meaningful large forms! We know this since Beethoven. But for not one second Poppe’s large form sounds like a repetition. There is always Poppe himself speaking – and everyone, the musicians and the audience alike, follow him spellbound.  When the 80-minute piece was over, you immediately wanted to listen to >Speicher< again."
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Eleonore Büning, October 24, 2013)

"Poppe’s music comes directly from the body. This leads to a sequence of ‘>mini dramas’<, with time going by quickly. (…) It is funny – and the sound is terrific."
Neue Zürcher Zeitung (Peter Hagmann, October 23, 2013)

"The strongest piece of this festival probably was Enno Poppe’s Speicher for large ensemble. (…) Poppe manages to solve the structural problem of the large form by writing clearly and comprehensivelyble. He also shows other compositional virtues: art of instrumentation and interdependent form elements."
Die Welt (Stephan Hoffmann, October 25, 2013)

"No wonder that Enno Poppe received the loudest applause for his >Speicher<."
Stuttgarter Zeitung (Mirko Weber, October 22, 2013)

"A highlight of this international festival for new music."
Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger (Rainer Nonnenmann, October 22, 2013)

"This large form has been a large success."
Südkurier (Elisabeth Schwind, October 21, 2013)

"In this major work he strives for nothing less than a delicate balance between the moment and the entirety. And he succeeded: both the entirety and every moment of it are full of richness."
nmz (Gerhard R. Koch, November 2013)
