The selection phase of ricordilab has come to a close. Ricordi Berlin and its advisory board would like to thank all the composers for their participation. We were very impressed by the number of applications from all over the world and by the artistic quality and the craftsmanship of the submitted works.
 
The laureates of ricordilab 2019-2022 are: Yair Klartag, Donghoon Shin and Lisa Streich. 

Ricordi Berlin will publish selected works by the laureates, support the composers with expertise in the music business, and provide international promotion for the period of three years.

Backed by a group of international associated partners who will feature the laureates in their programmes, we are looking forward to boosting the career of the laureates.

Yair Klartag

Yair Klartag was born in 1985 in Israel. He studied composition with several renowned composers, including Georg Friedrich Haas and Ruben Seroussi, before he successfully defended his dissertation at Columbia University in 2019. Klartag’s approach to the composing process focuses on the continuous perception of the listeners: “I care a lot about the inner form of a sound – understanding the duration that it needs to unfold and to be perceived. Playing with and against these inherent durations of sounds is one of the most frequently used strategies in my compositional tool box.” Yair Klartag’s new Concerto Grosso is to be premiered by Meitar Ensemble and the Thelma Yellin Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Pierre-André Valade. He is currently writing a new performative piece for the Munich Biennale 2020.

Donghoon Shin

Born in South Korea in 1983, Donghoon Shin lives in London, where he is pursuing a PhD in composition under the supervision of Sir George Benjamin at the King’s College. He studied composition at Seoul National University with Sukhi Kang and Uzong Choe, and with Julian Anderson at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. He also privately studied with Unsuk Chin. Being an admirer of J. L. Borges’ works, Donghoon Shin finds inspiration in the interconnectedness of the matters: “I was completely entranced by his writing and the idea of intertextuality. […] Through Borges‘ works, I’ve learnt how to mix and juxtapose disparate things to create a new meaning.” Currently, Donghoon Shin composes a new chamber orchestra piece for the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the conductor Peter Eötvös (December 2019), and a new work for orchestra commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Lisa Streich

Lisa Streich, born in Sweden in 1985, studied composition with Johannes Schöllhorn as well as organ with Margareta Hürholz at Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, with Adriana Hölszky at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg and with Mauro Lanza at IRCAM Paris. Recently, WERGO and KAIROS released portrait albums with her music. ”I am interested in everything that exists in life and everything that belongs to it: beauty, ugliness, religion, superficiality and cruelty”, says Streich about her work inspirations. Upcoming commissions include her new work FRANCESCA for ensemble recherche and Klangspuren Schwaz 2019, another new work for Hofkapelle Munich commissioned by the Kölner Philharmonie, and a new string quartet for Quatuor Diotima, commissioned by Shizuoka Concert Hall.
