Battistelli: World Premiere of Julius Caesar in Rome

On November 20, Giorgio Battistelli’s Julius Caesar makes its world premiere for the inauguration of the 2021-2022 opera season at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome. The tragedy in music with libretto by Ian Burton was commissioned by the Roman Opera.

On the orchestra podium will be Daniele Gatti, in his last appointment as musical director of the Capitoline Opera. The stage direction is entrusted to Robert Carsen, with whom Battistelli and Burton form a well-established trio, after the successful experiences of Richard III and CO2.

«The score was commissioned to me years ago and therefore the work was completed before the pandemic – says Battistelli – even if, in view of the performance, I simply planned some reduction in the orchestra. Carsen's direction will be incisive and intense. After all, it is a strong and civil story. And we will see the Italian Parliament on stage».

The cast includes Clive Bayley (Julius Caesar), Elliot Madore (Brutus) and Julian Hubbard (Cassius). After the November 20 premiere, the show will remain on stage for other five performances, until November 28.
