Verunelli and Aperghis in Donaueschingen

At the 2025 Donaueschinger Musiktage, two highly anticipated world premieres take center stage:

Francesca Verunelli’s La nuda voce I – the first installment of her new cycle for soprano and ensemble – will be brought to life by Johanna Vargas, Klangforum Wien, and conductor Vimbayi Kaziboni. After Donaueschingen, the cycle continues its voyage to Wien Modern (October/November 2025) and the Philharmonie de Paris (May 2026). Find out more in our article.

The Donaueschinger Musiktage will also showcase the world premiere of Georges Aperghis’ 45-minute "conversation" Tell Tales, performed by Tabea Zimmermann, vocal ensemble EXAUDI, and conductor James Weeks.

Both concerts will be streamed live on SWR Kultur.

Francesca Verunelli – La nuda voce I

"I was drawn to the idea of finding that moment when the intimate vibration of the vocal cords — the primordial essence of all sound—becomes singing, when “the bare voice” becomes the singing human voice. For me there is always a moment — a very brief moment — when we realise that this sound we are listening to is a human voice singing. There is a threshold, so brief but so crucial. With this piece I dreamed of inhabiting that brief moment as long as possible."

Georges Aperghis – Tell Tales

"Theatre within music: a polyphony of words, phonemes, situations, and stories triggered by the viola, which at times provokes, at times comments, or suggests other soundscapes. All the performers are caught in a necessity to express the urgency of the moment through shifting dialects. Listeners are free to create their own path through this labyrinth. This piece is written for and dedicated to Tabea Zimmermann and EXAUDI."
