Verdi’s Stiffelio in Frankfurt: Video
“
Stiffelio needs to be performed more often: quality must be made known”, says the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) about the latest production at Oper Frankfurt, which uses Ricordi’s critical edition.
Stiffelio was originally premiered in 1850 and fell victim to censorship. In response, Verdi edited the opera thoroughly and withdrew it in the end. Copies of the score were found not until 1968, which let to a rediscovery of
Stiffelio. The work was performed, among others, at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, starring Placido Domingo.
