Ricordi London signs Philip Venables

The music publisher G Ricordi & Co. (London) Ltd. has signed Philip Venables, one of the most important young British composers. Performers and commissioners of his music include The Royal Opera, the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, Wigmore Hall and the London Sinfonietta.

His opera „4.48 Psychosis“ has just been shortlisted for two Royal Philharmonic Society awards yesterday. The adaption of Sarah Kane’s work of the same name was premiered by the Royal Opera in 2016. It is also nominated for an Olivier Award and has already received the UK Theatre Award for Achievement in Opera last year.

Ricordi has also acquired existing works by Philip Venables, including „The Revenge of Miguel Cotto“ for two male vocalists and nine players as well as „numbers 76–80: tristan und isolde“ for four voices and string quartet. Philip Venables is currently working on a violin concerto and a music theatre work. In 2018, Philip Venables' first portrait album will be released on NMC Recordings.

Philip Venables was born in Chester, England, in 1979 and studied at Cambridge University, the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. His music has been recently described as “brutally effective” (Times) and “duly playful and occasionally disturbing” (Guardian). In 2017 Philip will have a residency at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire. Philip Venables lives in London and Berlin.
