Georg Kröll studied piano with Else Schmitz-Gohr and composition with Frank Martin and Bernd Alois Zimmermann at the College of Music in Cologne.
Between 1960 and 1964 he was a regular participant at the International Summer Course for New Music in Darmstadt and the International Gaudeamus Music Week in Bilthoven . This is also the time he began his career as a New Music pianist, chamber musician and as Lied-accompanist.
In 1962 he received the Encouragement Prize of the City of Cologne. In 1969/70 he was awarded an artist residency at the Villa Massimo in Rome.
Kröll has been living in Cologne since 1970, where he was a member of the composer collective Gruppe 8 between 1969 and 1972. He taught composition and music theory until 1997 at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne.
