Marco Tutino was born in Milan on May 30, 1954.
Along with a diploma classical studies, he also majored in flute and composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milano. 
His debut as a composer came in 1976 at the Gaudeamus festival, in the Netherlands.
Since then his music has enjoyed success among audiences and critics alike, throughout Europe, where his works have been featured in performances at major venues.   

Over the years much of Tutino’s focus has been on music for theater. His first opera was Pinocchio, which debuted in 1985, commissioned by I.C.O.S.S., in Vienna, and was also played at Genoa’s Teatro Carlo Felice. Then came Cirano (1987), for Laboratorio Lirico di Alessandria, directed by Gabriele Salvatores; it was performed once again in 1990 at the Arena in Verona; La Lupa (1990), commissioned by Centenario Mascagnano di Livorno; Federico II (1992), commissioned by the Bonn Opera; Il gatto con gli stivali (1994); the lyrical ballet Dylan Dog (1999) and the musical Peter Uncino (2001), both commissioned by Verona’s Fondazione Arena; Vita (2003), for La Scala; Le Bel indifférent (2004) and The Servant (2008), both commissioned by the Macerata Opera Festival; La bella e la bestia (2005), for Teatro Comunale di Modena; Senso (2010), for Palermo’s Teatro Massimo; Le Braci (2013), commissioned by the Teatro dell’Opera of Florence and the Festival della Valle d’Itria; La Ciociara (2015), commissioned by the San Francisco Opera House.

While in the catalogue of Marco Tutino musical scores for theatrical productions predominate, he’s also written numerous compositions for orchestra. Here are just a few: Requiem per le vittime della mafia, which premiered at the Cathedral of Palermo, March 27, 1993 – Tutino composed the score, conceived and promoted the project, along with six other composers chosen by him; Concerto per clarinetto e orchestra (1994), commissioned by La Scala; Canto di pace for tenor, choir and orchestra (2003), book based on writings by Pope John Paul II, featuring Placido Domingo, Roberto Alagna and Andrea Bocelli.

Marco Tutino’s most recent operas – Miseria e Nobiltà (2017), commissioned by Teatro Carlo Felice, Genoa (WP, February  2018), and Falscher Verrat (2017), commissioned by Theaterkiel, in Kiel, Germany (WP, November 2018) – are published by Casa Ricordi.

Besides his work as a composer, in 1990 Marco Tutino began working as an organizer and artistic consultant for theaters in Italy that stage opera performances. From 1990 to 1994 he was artistic director of Pomeriggi Musicali in Milano; from 1990 to 2002, he served as artistic consultant and resident composer for the Verona Arena Foundation; in 2002 he was appointed artistic director of Torino’s Teatro Regio; in 2006 he was named superintendent and artistic director of Bologna’s Teatro Comunale; in 2009 he was elected president of Anfols, the association that groups together Italy’s various operatic foundations.
