After graduating from the Spezialschule für Musik in Dresden, in 1972-73 Nicolaus Richter de Vroe studied composition and violin at the Hochschule für Musik in Dresden, from 1972-78 violin at Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, and in 1980 was employed as a violinist in the Berliner Staatskapelle. From 1980 to 1983 he continued his composition studies at the Akademie der Künste in East Berlin with Friedrich Goldmann as mentor, and took the Akademie’s electronic music seminar with Georg Katzer.

From 1978 to 1980 he participated in various chamber, improvisation and experimental ensembles, and in 1982 initiated the founding of the Ensemble für Neue Musik Berlin. Since the mid-eighties his orchestral works and chamber music have been performed on all the ARD radio stations, and at notable New Music festivals, including the Paris Festival d'Automne, the Venice Biennale, the Donaueschingen Festival, the Steirischer Herbst in Graz, the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, the Berlin Biennale, the Berliner Festwochen, at "Klangaktionen Neue Musik" and at musica viva in Munich.

Since 1988 Nicolaus Richter de Vroe has been employed in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1989 he founded the XSEMBLE Munich, which among other things has premiered numerous works by younger composers, and has appeared at many festivals. In 1996 he was co-initiator of the Munich Society for New Music (MGNM) and in subsequent years was a guest lecturer and attended concerts of his works at the Goethe Institutes in Prague, Buenos Aires and Kyoto.

Since the foundation of the BR Orchestral Academy in 2000, he has devoted himself to rehearsing contemporary works for the Academy’s chamber music series, and in the mid-nineties was named by the BR Symphony Orchestra as a musica-viva commissionee. In 2008 he became a member of the Sächsische Akademie der Künste.
