Vittorio Montalti was born in Rome (July 12, 1984). He graduated from Rome’s Santa Cecilia Conservatory, where he studied under Aldo Tramma, with a degree in piano; he also holds a degree in composition from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milano, where he studied under Alessandro Solbiati. He went on to specialized studies at the Santa Cecilia National Academy, with Ivan Fedele; and studied electronic music, Cursus 1 and Cursus 2, at IRCAM’s Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Montalti’s compositions have been commissioned and performed by a number of musical institutions in Italy and abroad, including Teatro dell'Opera (Rome); Teatro La Fenice (Venice); the Venice Biennale; Verdi Festival – Teatro Regio (Parma);  Aperto Festival – I Teatri (Reggio Emilia); Teatro Lirico Sperimentale (Spoleto); the Rome Philharmonic Academy; the Tuscany Regional Orchestra; Milano Musica; the Traiettorie Festival; Ex Novo Musica; the Bergamo Music Festival; Divertimento Ensemble-Rondò; the Pontino Festival; the New York Philharmonic Festival; IRCAM’s Centre Pompidou; Sinfonieorchester Orchesterzentrum|NRW.

In 2010 Montalti won the Silver Lion for Creativity at the Venice Biennale Contemporary Music Festival. He received the 2016 A Life in Music award from Venice’s Teatro La Fenice. Montalti has also worked as composer-in-residence at a number of prestigious institutions: the Italian Institute of Culture in Paris (2013); the American Academy in Rome, as recipient of the Marcello Lotti Italian Fellowship (2014); the Civitella Ranieri Foundation (2017); Fortissimissimo Firenze Festival – Amici della Musica di Firenze (2017). He is currently composer-in-residence for the Divertimento Ensemble’s 2018 season.

Montalti is especially interested in musical theater; he has written works for ensembles and two chamber operas, with both books by Giuliano Compagno. To date, several productions of those works have been staged. A lifelong fan of improvisation, he enjoys providing real-time electronics for theatrical and dance-theater projects. 

Montalti teaches Theory of Harmony and Analysis at the Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa Conservatory in Potenza; and History of Electroacoustic Music at the Ottorino Respighi Conservatory in Latina.
