Franceschini, Matteo

Born in Trento in 1979, Matteo Franceschini studied composition under Alessandro Solbiati at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan. 
He went on to do further studies at the Santa Cecilia National Academy in Rome under the guidance of Azio Corghi and attended the Cursus Annuel de Composition et d'Informatique Musicale at IRCAM in Paris. 
He has received commissions from the Filarmonica della Scala, the Venice Biennale, the Milano Musica festival, the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, the MITO Festival, RAI, Agon, the Divertimento Ensemble, the Orchestra Sinfonica Haydn di Bolzano e Trento, the Orchestre National d’Îls de France and the French State (Commande d’État) as well as from a number of other prestigious international music bodies.
 
His works, conducted among others by Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Pascal Rophé, Gustav Kuhn, Mikko Frank, David Atherton and Arturo Tamayo, have been performed in various international festivals including the Venice Biennale, the MITO- Settembre Musica festival, the Società del Quartetto, Milano Musica, the Festival Traiettorie, Rondò, the Unione Musicale, IRCAM, the Festival Agora, the Festival de Radio France, the Münchner Opernfestspiele – Festspiele+, the Operadhoy Festival, the Nederlandse Muziekdagen, the Zukunftsmusik Festival, the Festival för ny musik, the Prague Premieres, the Lockenhaus Kammermusikfest and the Harvard University festival. They have also been broadcast on a range of international radio stations.
He has composed works for the theatre, soundtracks for movies and multimedia installations.
 
Since 2006 he has been a member of Agon, one of the most important centres in Italy for the study and production of music by way of electronic and computer technology.
He received the title of Italian Affiliated Fellow of the Arts (Musical Composition) from the American Academy in Rome.
His first monographic CD, Il risultato dei singoli, performed by the Divertimento Ensemble, was released under the Stradivarius label in April 2011. 
In 2017, Franceschini adopted "Tovel" as his stage name for the project "ABCDEFG [a tuned sculpture]”. As "Tovel", he relaunches the figure of the author/interpreter. His direct, live involvement becomes therefore the expression of a creative act.

He was awarded the Silver Lion for music at the Venice Biennale 2019

Up until 2010 Matteo Franceschini’s music was published by Edizioni Suvini Zerboni – Sugarmusic in Milan. Since then it has been published by Casa Ricordi.
