Michael Gordon è conosciuto per le sue composizioni monumentali e coinvolgenti. La sua Decasia, scritta per 55 strumenti amplificati e distribuiti spazialmente (utilizzata anche come colonna sonora dell’omonimo film cult del regista Bill Morrison), è stata inserita all’interno del Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Minimalist Jukebox Festival e del Southbank Centre’s Ether Festival. Timber, un tour-de-force per sestetto di percussioni, suonato su simantra microtonali amplificati, è stato eseguito in ogni continente incluse le performances di Slagwerk Den Haag al Musikgebouw (Amsterdam), Mantra Percussion al BAM (New York), So Percussion al Barbican (Londra), Ictus al Maerzmusic (Berlino), a cui si aggiunge il live su NPR dal Lowe’s hardware store. Timber è stato remixato da Jóhann Jóhannsson, Oneohtrix Point Never e Squarepusher.

Gordon utilizza il posizionamento degli strumenti nello spazio per creare uno spettacolo avvolgente ed affascinante. Natural History, per 120 musicisti e i percussionisti della tribù locale Klamath, la prima volta è stato eseguito sulle rive del Crater Lake (Oregon) sotto la direzione di Teddy Abrams ed è stato oggetto del documentario PBS Symphony for Nature. Big Space, commissionato da BBC Proms, proiettato in prima assoluta alla Royal Albert Hall, con i musicisti a circondare il pubblico su tutti i lati. Rushes, per 7 fagotti, è stato recentemente eseguito al Park Avenue Armory (New York) e dalla London Contemporary Orchestra alla Queen Elizabeth Hall. La trilogia delle City Symphonies – Gotham per New York, Dystopia per Los Angeles, El Sol Caliente per Miami Beach – unisce la musica al cinema del regista Bill Morrison per catturare l’essenza delle rispettive città.

I lavori corali includono A Western, eseguito in prima assoluta alla Elbphilharmonie di Amburgo da Paul Hiller e Theatre of Voices; Anonymous Man, un brano corale autobiografico scritto per The Crossing, a proposito della strada frequentata da Gordon e delle sue conversazioni con i due senzatetto che vivevano lì. Tra le opere, What to wear con il leggendario regista teatrale Richard Foreman e Acquanetta con l’iconoclasta Daniel Fish.

Le composizioni di Gordon sono state coreografate dal Tanztheater Wuppertal di Pina Baush, dalla Random Dance Company di Wayne McGregor, dalle compagnie di balletto di Stoccarda, Zurigo, Royal, Miami, Scozia.
