La musica di Julia Wolfe si distingue per l’intensa fisicità e la straordinaria energia che spinge i performer agli estremi ed esige l’attenzione del pubblico. La prima mondiale nel 2019 di Fire in my mouth, un’opera di ampio respiro per orchestra e coro femminile, eseguita dalla New York Philharmonic con The Crossing e lo Young People’s Chorus di New York, ha ricevuto ampi apprezzamenti - un critico ha definito l’opera "un risultato straordinario nel dramma musicale di alto livello, tra le opere di maggior fantasia e potenza emotiva che io abbia mai visto." (The Nation Magazine)

La registrazione della prima di Fire in my mouth è stata pubblicata da Decca Gold e ha ricevuto due nomination per i Grammy (migliore composizione classica contemporanea e miglior engineered album classico). L’opera è la terza in una serie di composizioni dedicate ai lavoratori americani: Steel Hammer del 2009, che rivisita la figura dell’eroe popolare John Henry, e l’opera vincitrice del Premio Pulitzer nel 2015, Anthracite Fields, oratorio per coro e strumenti, che trae ispirazione da testimonianze, interviste, discorsi e altro materiale per onorare la storia dei minatori che lavorarono nelle miniere di carbone della Pennsylvania. Mark Swed del LA Times ha scritto che Anthracite Fields "cattura non solo la tristezza delle dure vite perdute, ma anche la dolcezza e la passione di un modo di vivere quotidiano ormai perduto. La musica costringe senza esagerare. È un’opera importante e profonda."

Wolfe ha scritto un importante corpus di opere per archi, dai quartetti a un’intera orchestra. La sua musica è ascoltata in tutto il mondo ed è registrata su Argo, Cantaloupe Music, Decca Gold, Point/Universal, Sony Classical e Teldec.

Oltre ad aggiudicarsi il Premio Pulitzer per la Musica 2015, Wolfe è stata MacArthur Fellow 2016, ha ricevuto l’Herb Alpert Award per la Musica nel 2015 ed è stata nominata Compositore dell’Anno di Musical America nel 2019. È docente alla New York University Steinhardt School
