Schönbach, Dieter (b. Stolp, Pomerania, Germany- now Poland, 18 Feb 1931), attended the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie in Detmold (1949-57, composition with Günther Bialas) and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg/Breisgau (1957-59, composition with Wolfgang Fortner). Since 1959 he has been music director of the Schauspielhaus in Bochum and director of the Bochum electronic and concrete music studio. Schönbach has done considerable work with experimental films. Through the influence of painting and sculpture he became involved with multimedia and musical environments, forming a multimedia team with Otto Piene and Edmund Kieselbach in 1967.
